ROWING 2

The Governor of Cross River State Senator Liyel Imoke has approved teh hosting of the maiden governor Liyek Imoke International competition billed for calbar thei december.

 Victor Anusa, praised governor Liyel Imoke for coming to the assistance of the federation in approving this championship, because this would be the first of its kind in nigeria since particpants for the championship are expected to come in from wihtin and outside to participate in the competiton.

an equally elated president of the rowing and sailing federation retired rear admiral festus bikipre igbehinadun porbeni gave kudos to the governor of cross river for supporting the federtion with this championship and promised that the federation would do everything to ensure that the championship is used as a launchpad for nigeria to raise her status in the comity top rowing countries in the world.

aside the championship governor liyel imoke is also exlpected to formally lauch sailing boats donated to it by the federation in furtherance of develompment of the sport in the state.

Victor Anusa stated further that the rowing championship would henceforth be incorporated into the calabar christmas carnival held annually in the cross river state capital in the month december.

he explained that after the three days championship the international canoe federation and the confederation of african canoe will conduct a course and examination (theory and practical) for twenty qualified Nigerians in Calabar for Ten days.

Sailing and Rowing

Their rowing and sailing federation is planning an international and kayak competition to be named after the Governor of Cross River State Senator Liyel Imoke.
The championship is schedule for December and is to be incorporated into the Calabar Chrismas Carnival.
Nigeria and other African countries are expected to participate in the 3 days event and during the championship the Governor will also launch the 26 boats donated by the international canoe federation for the growth of the sport .
International Seif Partua of Kenya and secetary of African Canoe Federation is expected to make a case for more assistance from the Federation for Nigerias sailing
President of the Federation Retired Rear Admiral Festus Kenya and Switzerland.
20 athletes are expected to participate inthe course as stipulated by the international body.
Practical, theory and fexans will be set up for participants, while certificates willbe issued after the course.

Nigeria scrabble team to the course way invitational scrabble world championship billed for Johorbaru Malasyia will depart Lagos for Malasyia on the 28th of November 2010.
The five players that will fly Nigerias flag at the championship are Seidu Ayorinde, Chinedu Okwelugu, Moses Peters, Jighere Wellington and Denis Ikekeregor. Then the officials are President of the Nigeria Scrabble Federation Engineer Toke Aka, The coach Victor Owookere and the technical director Mpaka Jack.
The course way scrabble championship is billed to hold from the 1st to the 5th of December2010.
The National Interzonal Scrabble Club Championship will come up from the16th to 19th of December in Abuja the secetary of the scrabble federation James Aekins said that the six zonal champions will vie against each other to know the National Club Champions of Nigeria.

AFRICAN SCRABBLE.

The Nigeria Scrabble Federation have released the names of the twelve Scrabble Players that will represent Nigeria at the forthcoming African Scrabble Championsship billed for Accra Ghana fro the 20th to the 24th of October.
The Secretary of theFederation Aikens James gave the names as Balogun Rasheed,Ikekeregor Dennis Umeabiye Cyril,Eta Karo and Faloye Ibukun.Others are Omosefe Prince, Sunday Oshodi,Seidu Ayorinde and Jighere Wellington.On standby are Wale illori and Chinedu Okuelogu.According to the Federation, the players will report to Camp in two weeks time.Meanwhile Ikolo Anthony has won the Abuja National Open Masters by placing first in the Tournament,second was Umeabiye Cyril and third was Omosefe Prince.In the Opens category Jacob Ryan was first second was Emma Ufuoma and third was Adamu Mansur.

A total of 300 Karate Practitoners from Nigeria and other Countries in the West African Sub Region will be inducted into the Black Belt College on the 19th of September.The Induction will be one of the highlights of a week long activity lined up by the Nigeria Karate Association to celebrate the the 16th anniversary of the Black Belt College. The activities will include General Conditioning,Training,Lectures,Officiating,Clinic,Extra-Ordinary National Council Meeting and a Championship.The Venues for the one week event are the National Institute for Sports Surulere and Lekki Beach both in Lagos.Spokesman of the NKA and one of the founding fathers of the Premier Karate Organization,Micklem Emechete Attoh said the occassion would be graced by all the big names in the Martial arts in the Country and beyond.Emechete said the highlights of the one week programme would be the launch of the Japan Karate Association in Nigeria.Those who will conduct affairs in the one week programme are Mr Jean Wapcha from Gabon who is a Director in Japan Karate Association,founding member of the NKA,Mr Jaques Mbom,Mr Aina James and Jegede Dave.


Emechete Attoh said the NKA Extra Ordinary of Council Meeting will address several issues as they affect Karate.Emechette Attoh stressed that the week programme is an effort of individuals who have given all their time and resourses to the sport.

AFRICAN SWIMMING CHAMPIONSHIP

Eleven Swimmers and five Officials departed in the midnight of 12th to participate in the African Swimming Championship billed for Rabat Morrocco from the 13th to the 18th of this month.The Swimmers who will wear Nigeria,s colours at the Championship are Samson Opuakpo,Yellow Yeiyah,Perelate Gbagi,Shedrack Awolowo,Albert Britilagatoi and Nemune Tebesia.Others are Rachel Tonjo,Faith Edorodion,Esther Omosehin,Gbaitomimi Williams and Timi Orunoh.
The Coaches are Monday Aigbe,Pius Benazimoh and Regina Enofe.The Nigeria Contigent to the Championship will be led by the President of the Nigeria Swimming Federation Babatunde Fatai Williams and the Secretary of  the Federation Gloria Ekwempu will also be part of the team.Cheif coach of the Team Monday Aigbe believes they would do well in the short Sprint in the Pool and they would concentrate on it to get medals for the Country.
In a related Development the Lagos State Swimming Association have fixed October 1st and 2nd as the date for the Independent Age Group Swimming Championship,the Championship will invovle Children in the Eleven and under,Twelve and under, thirteen and under,Under fourteen and under Fifteen and this will also invovle Clubs and Schools in Lagos State participating in the two day Championship.
The Chairman of the Lagos State Swimming Association Reverend Nseobong Samuel Jesimiel said the Championship would afford the state the opportunity of picking  Swimmers that would represent the Lagos State at the National Age  Group Swimming billed for Calabar in November and also for the National Sports Festival billed for Port Harcourt Rivers State in February  next year.Certificates,Medals and Plaques will be given to the Children after the Championship.

SAILING

Five Rowers will fly Nigeria,s Flag at the 2010 World Rowing Championship billed Auckland New Zealand from the 31st of October to the 8th of November.
The Secretary of the Rowing and Sailing Federation of Nigeria Victor Anusa said that the Federation received a letter of invitation from the International Rowing Federation to participate in the event.He stated further that the Rowers and one Coach would make the trip,also to make the trip are the Federation Secretary Victor Anusa,Technical Director Ebenezer Okwuna,a representative of the Cheif of Naval Staff Navy Captain Isaac Mankilik,the Marketer of the Federation and former Nigerian Quatermiler Enofiok Udobong.

SCRABBLE UPDATE

The Board of the Nigeria Scrabble Federation of Nigeria will meet on the 17th of September in Abuja to deliberate on the progress of the sport in the country.
According to the Secretary of the Federation James Aikens the Board would amongst other things deliberate on the forthcoming Governor Godswill Akpabio International Scabble Tournament billed for Uyo Akwa Ibom in late October.Various Sub Committees will be set up to see to the success of the Akpabio Scrabble Tournament which carries one of the biggest prize money in International Scrabble Tournament.

SCRABBLE

This year,s Edition of the Abuja Scrabble Open will hold on the 18th and the 19th of September.
According to a release by the Technical Director of the Scrabble Federation of Nigeria Mpaka Jack there will  be three categories,the Masters  those with 1350 points and above,the opens 1350 points and below and Veterans for Captains of Industries and 55 years and above will participate in the event.
The winner in the Masters will go home with 100,000 naira,2nd place 50,000,3rd place 20,000.In the Opens Category the winner will go home with 50,000 naira,2nd 25,000 naira and third place 12,000 naira.The Veteran Category winner will go home with 50,000 naira,2nd 15,000 and third 10,000 naira.
The release further stated that Registration of players for the tournament will close on the 15th of September and that after this tournament players that will represent Nigeria at the African Scrabble Championship billed for Ghana in October will be selected.

SWIMMING

October 1st and 2nd have been declared as the two days that the Lagos State Swimming Association will hold the Lagos State Age Group Swimming Championship billed for the Teslim Balogun Stadium Swimming Pool.The Chairman of the Association Reverend Nseobong Samuel Jesimiel said that Swimming Championship would hold in five categories.They are the Under 11,Under 12,Under 13,Under 14 to 15 and Under 16.He stated further that the Championship which is bankrolled by the Lagos State Goverment would have the Children participating in the event earning Certificates and token cash rewards. 

TAEKWANDO

 TheTaekwando Federation of Nigeria have concluded plans to send some of it,s men and women to Mali to attend an International Referees and Coaches Course in October.
According to the President of the Federation Jonathan Nnaji,the Course is sponsored by the World Taekwando Federation to help developing Countries to attain greater heights in the sport,he stated further that the Course would run for five days after which Exams would be set in both theory and practical for participants.Meanwhile a new date will be released for Muslim  brothers to partake in the Coaches course which was held in August.Muslims could not participate in the Coaching Course held at the Sport Writers Association of Nigeria Lagos Chapter Secretariat due to the Ramadan Fast.They will choose the venue and state they wish to have the Course after the Ramadan.

KARATE

The Karate Federation of Nigeria have concluded plans to organize a Military and Paramilitary Club Karate Championship.The Secretary of the Federation Clement Iyaluogbehe said that the Championship would involve the Nigerian Army,Navy and the Air force.The Paramilitary Formations expected are the Immigration,Customs,Road Safety Corp Marshall and the National Civil De fence Corp.The Championship will come up at the Ahmadu Bello Stadium Kaduna from the 6th to 11th of October.
 Iyaluogbehe stated further that apart from the competitive aspect which will involve the weight categories,Kata,Kumite and the team championship,there will also be the combat training for Military men.
He said the Championship is a contribution of the Karate Federation to the Miltary and appealed that all the Military and Paramilitary Formations should send their men for the Championship. Meanwhile an Invitational Karate Championship is billed Owerri Imo State from the 10th to the 13th of November.This is a Tournament that will cover the South Eastern States and some states like Akwa Ibom,Rivers,Bayelsa and Benue states.

HANDBALL 2

The camping of Nigeria,s under 17 boys and girls Handball team  resumed on Monday the 30th of August in Kaduna.According to the Secretary of the Handball Federation of Nigeria Olusola Luke the camping resumed on Monday after a one week break which was due to the postponement of the Commonwealth Handball Championship billed for Cameroun.
The Commonwealth Handball Youth Championship will come up from the 8th to the 19th of September in Yaounde Cameroun.In a related development,Nigeria,s under 23 Men and Women,s Handball team began camping on Friday the 27th of  August ahead of the Economic Organization of West African  State(ECOWAS) games also billed for Abuja in the month of September.The teams camping in Abuja is meant to assist the teams in their preparation for the Ecowas Games.Meanwhile Nigeria,s under 20 women s  Handball team returned to the Country on Sunday night after participating in the week-long Women,s International Handball Federation finals held in Abidjan Cote di Voire.
The team who returned by road placed third at the end of the Championship after defeating Benin Republic in the third placed  match.The Nigerian Girls thus qualify to play in the International Handball  Federation World Challenge Trophy Tournament billed for a yet to be named country.Host Cote Di Voire placed first while Togo placed second.

CRICKET

Playoffs for the 2010 National Cricket Club Champions in the three Zones will hold next weekend September 4th.The South-East,South-South and North-West Zones will be engaged in matches to determine who joins the South-West Champions,Ibeju Lekki Cricket Club in the finals to be played in Abuja from 10TH TO 12th September 2010.
ILCC are the tournament champions having won the trophy back to back in the last two seasons and again Qualified to represent the South-West Zone by topping the Club Cricket Committee CCC,League in Lagos.
In the South- East Zone,the Champion Club of Anambra,Imo and Enugu States will lock horns at the University of Nigeria,Nsuka Cricket Oval to determine who will fly the flag of the Zone.In the South-South,F-16 Cricket Club of Benin,winners of the Edo League this season will lock horns with the River State Whales Cricket Club to determine will represent the zone in a one match Playoff in Benin on Saturday.
In the North West,Kaduna Crocodiles,Cricket Club of Abuja (CCA) and the Kebbi State Champion Club will engage themselves in a Round Robin series at the Muritala Mohammed Square Cricket Oval,Kaduna.The Nigeria Cricket Federation have disclosed that this year,s finals in Abuja will be played in line with the One Day International (ODI)standards with participating club donning coloured clothing and a white Cricket ball.

HANDBALL

Nigeria,s under 23 men and women Handball team began camping on saturday the 27th of this month in Abuja ahead of the Economic Organisation of West African State (ECOWAS),Games billed also for Abuja.According to the Secretary of the Handball Federation of Nigeria Olusola Luke,the team,s camping in Abuja would afford both teams the opportunity to train well for the Games.

Meanwhile the finals of the under 20 Women International Handball Federation finals of the Challenge Trophy Zone 3 came on Saturday in Abidjan Cote di voire.The  Nigerian Girls who spent two days on the road to get to Abidjan from Kaduna where they camped were worked over in their first match against host Cote di voire.
The defeated Liberia in their second match,beat Togo in their 3rd match and defeated Benin Republic in their 4th match.A victory for Nigeria will qualify them for the World Challenge Trophy which was created of by IHF to help in the development Handball around the World.

Ten Federations Update

Following the failure of the Presidents of the Ten Sports Federation removed from the forthcoming National Sport Festival to present their case before the Stakeholders Conference organized by the House Committee on Sport last week in Abuja.
The Sport Federation Presidents are not letting up in their struggle to making sure that they heard and that their Sports should be part of the Sports Festival.They have resolved to formally present their case before the Sports Minister and Chairman of the National Sports Council Alhaji Ibrahim Isa Bio. 
  Spokesman of  the group and President of the Scrabble Federation of Nigeria Engineer Toke Aka stated that their visit to the Sport Minister was to table their grievances  before him and to explain to the dangers inherent in stopping the Ten Sports from participating at the National Sports Festival.
Toke Aka stated further that the action is more of retrogression than progression because  for as long as these sports do not feature there is no way they can improve we will not have the taproot is like nipping the grass root development in the bud because states are like our taproot as long as we don,t have feeders from them is it from the center that we will get our feeders from?
Adding further he said that as long as these games no longer feature in the Festival i can tell you that the States will more or less disband their state associations will have no reason to employ secretaries,will have no reason to employ coaches and ones that happens that is the end of Sports development in Nigeria.On the response of the Sport Ministry to their plight  he said  i think it is the authorities who have said exclude these sports we cannot be all inclusive anymore i don,t see them budging because they are the ones who enacted  unless a strong pressure comes for them to see the rationale behind why they should not do such a thing i don,t see them changing their mind.On whether there is any hope of the sports being at the Festival he replied by saying that with enough public outcry  then is hope.And that they hoping on the convening of a meeting of the Council of Sports to save the situation.

SWIMMING

The Nigerian Swimming Federation have invited Twelve Swimmers to camp in preparation for the 10th African Swimming Championship billed for Rabat Morocco.
The President of the Federation Mr Babatunde Fatai Williams stated that the 12 Swimmers and 3 coaches would report to camp at the Surulere Games Village on the 22nd of August for the camping exercise.
According to to him, Kenya was supposed to host the championship initially but could not, due to financial reasons, hence Morrocco took it upon herself to host the swimming championship, which will come up from the thirteenth of September to the eighteenth of September. 
Amongst the swimmers invited are Yellow Yeiyah of the Nigeria Police, Samson Opuapo from Delta State, Awolowo Shedrack of the Nigeria Police, Albert Perilagato of Ondo State, for men, for the women, we have Rachael Tonjo Edo State, Bamitomi Williams from Delta State, Esther Omosehin from Ondo State, Prelate Gbagi from Nigeria Police, Otiko Pilibo from Ondo State and Timi Onuoha from Ogun State.

SQUASH

The Chief of Army Staff National Open Squash Tournament which was supposed to serve off on the sixteenth of this month has been postponed.According to to the President of the Squash Racket Federation of Nigeria Rotarian Femi Ajagbe,the postponement was due to the Ramadan Fast that is being observed by Muslims worldwide.He stated that the tournament has been slated to serve off on October 11th and the venue is the Aguiyi Ironsi Army Cantonment Abuja.Participants expected in the tournament are the military men,civilians and veterans.

Chess

The Nigeria Chess Federation have concluded plans to org anise a National Open Chess Tournament from the 22nd to the 28th of August.According to the Media Officer of the Chess Federation Femi Solaja over 500 Chess players are expected to participate in the Tournament.He further stated that the tournament is in preparation towards the Chess Olympiad billed for October in Siberia Russia.

Ten Federation

About ten Federations have said that they are going to express their displeasure to the Hose Committee on Sport over the non inclusion of their sport in the forthcoming National Sports Festival  billed  for Port Harcourt Rivers State .President of the Scrabble Federation of Nigeria Engineer Toke Aka who spoke on behalf of these Federations said that they intend to use Stakeholders Forum with the House Committee on Sports in Abuja tomorrow to make their feelings known on the issue.He said though the Stakeholders Forum is meant    for Football they would use the opportunity to present their case for a look into other sports.The sports complaining of not being part of the National Sports Festival are Scrabble,Cricket,Squash,Rowing and Yachting,Fives,Baseball,Deaf sport and Parasoccer.Twenty five Sports will be vied for at the Sports Festival,20 of which were sanctioned by the National Sports Commission while the remaining five sporting event were picked by the host state of the National Sport Festival..Toke Aka further revealed that if there were know positive response from the forum they would hold a News Conference to drive home their point.  

Table Tennis

The Nigeria Table Tennis Federation have released the team list that will represent Nigeria at the Commonwealth Games billed for India.The list is made up of six men which includes Ojo Onaolapo,Monday Merontoun,Haruna Quadri,Lanre Jegede,Kazeem Nosiru and Seun Ajetunmobi.
Edem Offiong,Ganiat Ogundele,Olaide Atinuke,Janet Effiom and Alimot Hussein make up the women,s list.The team will be camped in France ahead of the Games for proper preparation.The mens Table Tennis team will also travel to Dubai to participate in the World Team Table Tennis Cup in September.Dubai trip is planned inorder for the players to be in top shape for the Games,the World Team Cup ends on October 1st and they will depart for India from Dubai.Meanwhile Ojo Onaolapo will depart for Singapore on August 12th for the World Youth Olympics which starts on the 14th,Onaolapo who played in the International Table Tennis Federation Junior Circuit could not get beyond the first round.The ITTF junior tournament was meant to prepare him for the Youth Olympics.
